MECHANICAL TESTING

Instron 5948 Micro-mechanical Test System

The 5948 model Micro Tester is adapted for performing a test on small size specimens by combining an ultra-high accurate control system with high-precise load measurement. The Micro Tester can perform tension, compression, shear, and low-cycle fatigue tests with a load force range of less than 2mN up to 2KN.  Micro-position displacement control is obtained using preloaded ball-screw drive system that is equipped with both a rotary encoder and a 10 nm axial displacement resolution encoder. The Instron is equipped with Thermal Cycling chamber (-70C to +250C)  and adjustable optical microscope with a maximum magnification of 90X.

Nanoindentation using The Hysitron TI 950

The Hysitron TI 950 is an automated, high-throughput equipment for performing nanomechanical characterization including hardness, modulus, and tan delta—as a function of indentation, displacement, frequency, and time.  high load transducer allows indents to be made at loads of up to 2.8 N over a displacement of up to 90 microns. It contains a sizable open sample stage that can accommodate multiple sample sizes. The Hysitron TI 950  is equipped with heating stages to perform tests at elevated temperatures. A vacuum stage can retain samples with smooth bottom surfaces.

During each indentation experiment, load versus indentation displacement response of the test samples in the direction normal to the cross-sectional surface can be measured.
